World Elite Sumo is bringing a one-night professional sumo tournament to Santa Cruz this September, featuring elite athletes from around the world.
World Elite Sumo Heads to Santa Cruz
World Elite Sumo is set to make history in California with a one-day professional sumo tournament at Kaiser Permanente Arena in Santa Cruz on September 26, 2026.
The tournament will feature 12 larger-than-life athletes competing in a single-elimination format, bringing the power, tradition, and athleticism of professional sumo to a new audience on the California Central Coast.

The event will officially launch World Elite Sumo's 2026 Fall Tour, with additional tournaments planned for Orlando in October and Washington in November.
According to the announcement, this will also be the first televised professional sumo event held in California.

The remaining spots in the 12-athlete field are expected to include additional international and local competitors, adding another unpredictable element to the one-night tournament.
World Elite Sumo is also exploring an exhibition match featuring two women ahead of the tournament, as the organization continues developing women's sumo competitions for future seasons.
Beyond the competition itself, fans can expect the unique atmosphere that has become part of the World Elite Sumo experience, including live Taiko drumming, international athletes, and the traditions of Japanese sumo presented through a modern entertainment experience.
